What Can I Do at Home?
- Read to and with your child each night (remember to let him/her turn the pages)
- After reading a book, ask your child questions about what happened in the story
- While looking at books, pick out capital and lowercase letters in the alphabet and practice making the letter sounds
- Create handwriting practice sheets at http://www.handwritingworksheets.com/ (use the print style writing)
- Practice writing his/her first name (starting with a capital letter only)
- Count orally and practice counting groups of items
- Practice writing alphabet letters and numbers
- Discuss the weather outside (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, snowy)
- Discuss what day is today (days of the week)
- Work together to find colors, shapes, letters and numbers around the house
- Allow your child to work with pencils, crayons, markers, glue and scissors
- Problem solve with your child (how would you share or ask for help)
- Ask your child to follow multiple step directions (please put your cup away and sit on the couch etc.)
- Talk with your child about going to school and set your morning/bed time routines several weeks prior to the first day of school
- Discuss who will take him/her to and from school
- Practice zipping and unzipping backpacks, coats, clothing, and lunch boxes
- Practice opening water bottles, special lunch box containers or treats
- Encourage your child to use his/her words when he/she requests items or to solve problems
- Complete homework assignments given by your child's teacher; this will promote home to school connections to ensure your child is mastering his/her skills in order to be promoted to the next grade level
- Promote healthy study habits by creating a "study space" away from distractions such as pets, TV, toys, etc.
Most importantly, talk with your child about school and encourage the love that he/she will have for learning! Please visit our website and look for updates and new tips on how to help your child make the transition into Bennett Kindergarten. Our job is to meet your child wherever he/she may be academically and we are ready and willing to go the extra mile to help your child have a successful year. We are here to help you and your child and are very excited to start the upcoming school year.
Thank you for your support!
