Kindergarten Curriculum Snapshot
What your child will learn in Kindergarten and parent tips:
ELAR:
Students will learn to:
Build oral language and vocabulary through our sight words (Fry’s Words)
Identify the alphabet, letter sounds and special blends
Decode cvc and cvce words
Create words that rime with their specific word family
Orally distinguish between words that rhyme and don't rhyme
Understand and use concepts of print when reading
Recognize and write sentences with appropriate spacing, capitalization and ending punctuation
Write a short story with logical order
Identify the topic of stories and retell main events/facts from stories
Use comprehension strategies to compare/contrast, predict and make sense of stories
Identify story elements
Identify and use different forms of media literacy
Identify and use nouns, verbs and adjectives
How to help your child at home:
Practice your child’s sight word list, alphabet letters and sounds
Practice creating rhyming words
Practice writing his/her name
After reading a book, ask comprehension questions (who, what, when, why, how) retell and compare
stories that you read
Discuss words within their sentence and count the words used. Be sure to note the spaces between words
and the word order. Once children get the left to right progression and begin writing a sentence, discuss
editing for capital letters, spacing and ending punctuation.
Write simple sentences with your sight words and encourage stretching your words like bubble gum to
hear beginning, middle and ending sounds.
Write about family vacations/activities/pets etc.
Math:
Students will learn to:
Identify and write numbers 0-20
Orally count to 100 by ones and tens
Use problem solving skills to solve addition and subtraction story problems up to 10
Identify coins and amounts
Identify and describe 2 and 3 dimensional figures
Measurement: length, capacity and weight
Collect data in order to create and interpret a graph
How to help your child at home:
Practice counting and describing and sorting objects
Practice identifying and writing numbers
Use the sorted objects to create a graph and discuss the results (most, least, equal to etc.)
Create simple addition and subtraction story problems
Allow your child to observe the coins in your pocket or purse
Look for shapes around your house
Allow your child to measure objects with rulers and compare those objects as heavier and lighter
Science/Social Studies:
Students will learn to:
Identify rules, authority figures, jobs in the home, school and community
Use maps and globes to describe and local places
Identify and describe symbols of citizenship, patriotic holidays, compare cultures and traditions
Distinguish between human needs and wants
Describe the lifecycle of a plant
Identify and describe the changes in weather and seasons
Compare properties of rocks, soil and water
Use science tools for investigations
Use technology to help research
Investigate the uses of light, heat and magnets
How to help your child at home:
Use the weekly newsletter to help you begin conversations about the current units of study
Discuss holidays, customs and traditions that your family follow
Using a calendar discuss holidays and events
Look at maps and globes together to locate different landforms and how living their differs from our area
Allow your child to conduct investigations at home with safe tools
Discuss changes in weather and seasons and how your child should dress
